The challenge as we see it
In today’s world, both businesses and local governments alike need to meet increasing energy demands while achieving sustainability commitments. At the same time, waste generation levels are accelerating, leaving communities and industry looking for ways to sustainably recycle or recover resources.
Our differentiated value
Veolia’s unparalleled cross-industry expertise in energy and waste management uniquely positions us to develop solutions that unlock the energy potential of organic and inorganic wastes.
In developing and operating energy solutions from recovered waste streams, we help communities and industry derive maximum value from resources to encourage a sustainable, circular economy.
- Proven solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions
- Electricity and thermal energy applications
- Progressive circular economy approaches
- Local job creation and waste reduction
Operating 65 waste-to-energy facilities around the world, Veolia is the operations and maintenance provider of the Metro Vancouver Waste-to-Energy Facility. The facility processes about one quarter of Metro Vancouver's solid waste producing approximately 180,000 megawatts per year of electricity (enough to power 16,000 homes) and recovering about 5,000 tonnes of recyclable metal per year.
Metro Vancouver plans to develop a district energy system that will triple the amount of energy the facility can recover, by using the steam generated through the combustion of garbage to provide heat and hot water to up to 50,000 homes in Vancouver and Burnaby.
Veolia’s proprietary anaerobic bioreactor technology helps avoid 87,000 metric tons of GHG emissions in Milwaukee, WI.
Our solutions for waste streams to energy

Veolia creates cost-effective, environmentally sustainable solutions that convert waste streams to energy through methods such as anaerobic digestion and biogas, landfill gas, biomass, and fuel blending.
Waste to energy solutions:
- Anaerobic digestion & biogas - Veolia utilizes biogas from the anaerobic digestion of organic waste to fuel cogeneration facilities. By converting biosolids, fats, oils and grease into electricity and heat, Veolia can help systems increase resource productivity while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
- Landfill gas - The methane produced in landfills can be recycled and used for the production of electricity and thermal energy, effectively diverting waste from landfills and eliminating tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Veolia offers expertise in developing and managing these solutions for a broad range of clients.
- Biomass energy - Veolia operates and maintains biomass facilities where waste streams, such as poultry litter and wood waste, are used as fuel to generate renewable, cost effective energy.
- Fuel blending -Veolia recovers the thermal energy of non-recyclable waste through combustion, generating energy that can be used in industrial processes.

Converting Toronto's Organic Waste to Renewable Energy
Veolia has operated and maintained the Disco Road anaerobic digestion facility since its inception in 2014 and ensures that 75,000 metric tonnes per annum —approximately 45%—of Toronto residents' organic food wastes are processed and diverted from landfill. This waste, collected through the Green Bin curbside program, includes food scraps, soiled paper, disposable diapers, feminine hygiene products, and pet waste. The City is converting the biogas generated at the facility to a renewable natural gas which will be used to offset Toronto's greenhouse gas emissions.

Canada
Once operational, the biomass plant will help avoid the annual discharge of 95,000 metric tons of CO2 annually – the equivalent of keeping more than 45,000 cars off the road.

United States
The energy from the plant — enough to power about 2,800 homes — is purchased by Wisconsin Public Service to partially fulfill the requirements of Wisconsin's Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS).
