Norfolk, Ontario

The challenge

Veolia North America's customized approach meets clients' needs, delivers savings and environmental compliance.

The project challenges are:

  • In 1998, the counties of Haldimand and Norfolk entered into a contract with Veolia for the operations/maintenance/management (O&M) of the counties extensive system of wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Six years later, to meet the counties' changing needs, each began negotiating separate agreements with Veolia.
  • Then in 2006 Norfolk County signed a five-year contract with the company. Facilities consist of a 3.36-MGD activated sludge wastewater treatment plant, 1.42-MGD plant, 0.84 plant, two lagoon treatment plants and 23 lift stations. We are also in charge of land application of 800 dry-tons-per-year of biosolids.

The solution

Innovative solutions:

  • Smooth transition to private operation with all facilities' effluent performance meeting or exceeding permit requirements
  • Make maintenance modifications to improve performance and extend equipment life
  • Work with Norfolk County to accommodate new requirements and supply a separate dedicated O&M staff to operate county's five treatment facilities
  • Provide annual financial support to range of community events
