Veolia has invested $1 million to expand waste processing capacity at its Chatham, Ontario facility, helping businesses across Southwestern Ontario access more reliable, local hazardous waste management services.

The enhanced capabilities are designed to improve service responsiveness and support clients’ sustainability objectives, while advancing Veolia’s GreenUp strategy.

The company invested $1 million in a specialized three-phase centrifuge system and additional tank processing capacity, quadrupling the facility's daily processing capability from 60,000 to 240,000 liters of hazardous materials per day. This expansion will help lessen the use of landfill disposal in Ontario for hazardous and non-hazardous materials which is projected to reach its limit by 2034.

Advanced Three-Phase Separation Technology

Veolia Chatham's specialized 3-stage centrifuge is designed to separate mixtures into three distinct phases: solids and two immiscible liquids, such as oil and water.

Key Benefits:

  • Efficiency: Effectively separates components to minimize the volume of mixture requiring disposal
  • Cost Savings: Reduces environmental footprint and lowers overall disposal costs
  • Compliance: Ensures waste streams are properly separated and treated in accordance with environmental regulations

Target Industries:

  • Oil and Gas: Separates process oils from water and solids to reduce waste costs
  • Wastewater Treatment: Isolates oils and solids to minimize environmental impact and costs

Off-Site Processing Advantages

While mobile units are a viable temporary solution, utilizing Veolia's off-site unit provides additional benefits:

  • Space Optimization: Preserves valuable space at your facility
  • Chemical Management: Eliminates the need to purchase and store reagent chemicals on-site
  • Risk Mitigation: Prevents the discharge of mistreated wastewater into your systems, avoiding costly repairs and downtime, including negative publicity
  • Regulatory Peace of Mind: Ensures your facility remains in full compliance with municipal, provincial, and federal regulations

"This investment provides Ontario businesses that produce hazardous waste with the security and capacity they need to increase production," said Stephane Marleau, Veolia’s General Manager Canada, Hazardous Waste. "We're not only adding processing capacity for Ontario generators of hazardous waste, but we're also significantly reducing what goes to landfill."

The results have been impressive. During December 2025 alone, the Chatham team processed a substantial volume of waste from refineries and other industrial operations in southwestern Ontario, with a significant percentage of the volume recovered as water instead of being sent for disposal.

"This provides a great sustainability story for our clients as well as an innovative solution to the market," said Marleau.

Veolia is the global leader in hazardous waste management, processing 8.7 million tons annually with hazardous waste facilities in Ontario (Pickering, Ottawa, Chatham) and Quebec (Chambly). The Chatham facility expansion comes as Veolia strengthens its position as a global leader in hazardous waste management. In November 2025, Veolia announced its acquisition of U.S.-based Clean Earth from Enviri for $3 billion, making it the number two hazardous waste processor in North America.

Following this acquisition, the group's turnover in hazardous waste will increase to 5.2 billion euros.

The Chatham investment demonstrates Veolia's commitment to providing essential environmental services while supporting economic growth and sustainability in Ontario and across North America.
