Ontario Minister of Environment Tours Veolia’s Cutting-Edge Waste-to-Energy Facility in London, England

Honourable Todd McCarthy, Ontario’s Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks and Acting Minister of Infrastructure, for a tour of its state-of-the-art Waste-to-Energy (WtE) facility in London, England.

Veolia Canada was privileged to welcome the Honourable Todd McCarthy, Ontario’s Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks and Acting Minister of Infrastructure, for a tour of its state-of-the-art Waste-to-Energy (WtE) facility in London, England.

A Model for Sustainable Waste Management

The London facility exemplifies Veolia’s commitment to innovative, low-carbon solutions, with key achievements including:

  • Processing over 435,000 tonnes of solid waste annually
  • Generating 35 MW of clean energy—enough to power thousands of homes
  • Powering 38 electric vehicles that collect recyclables from a nearby Veolia recycling facility

The tour coincided with the global Energy from Waste Conference, where Veolia’s Marco Fontana-Giusti, Vice-President of Municipal Services, joined Ashley De Souza, CEO of Waste To Resources Ontario and Joe Lyng, General Manager of Emerald Energy — in a panel discussion on the future of Canada’s waste-to-energy sector, exploring opportunities for policy alignment, technological advancements, and public-private partnerships.

Expanding Impact in Canada: Metro Vancouver’s Waste-to-Energy Leadership

Veolia operates and maintains Metro Vancouver’s Waste-to-Energy Facility—one of Canada’s most advanced—processes one-quarter of the region’s waste:

  • Producing: 180,000 MWh of electricity annually (enough to power 16,000 homes)
  • Recovering 5,000 tonnes of recyclable metal per year

Veolia also manages capital upgrades, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient waste management for the region. A groundbreaking district energy expansion is underway, leveraging steam from waste combustion to triple energy recovery—providing heat and hot water to up to 50,000 homes in Vancouver and Burnaby. This initiative aligns with Veolia’s GreenUp strategic program, which prioritizes local, low-carbon energy production as a driver of sustainable growth.

Nicolas Germond, Country Director and CEO of Veolia Canada, stated: "We are proud to partner with Metro Vancouver to deliver essential waste management services while pioneering solutions that maximize resource recovery. As a global leader in ecological transformation, Veolia is committed to sharing expertise across borders—whether in London or Burnaby—to develop high-performance, low-carbon energy systems that benefit communities and the planet."
